olympics

Oh, what larks.

At Saatchi & Saatchi we invented a great event, one that everyone could join in and it was called The Advertising Olympics . There was no actual jumping, throwing or running around as the event was entirely notional and perhaps, you may think (and some did!) a tad cruel.

The idea was very simple.

We had 10 events (see below) and produced Entry Sheets which we sent around the Agency and asked everyone to enter a name, as the probable Gold Medal Winner, against every event, and the person with the most names won!

The strange thing was that very few people were actually concerned about being connected with such events and some of the eventual winners were actually delighted and proudly displayed their little trophies in their offices.

Also, interestingly, all the winners were accurately nominated…

1. THROWING THE WOBBLY

2. PASSING THE BUCK

3. MISSING THE POINT

4. JUMPING THE GUN

5. LEAPING TO CONCLUSIONS

6. AVOIDING THE ISSUE

7. MOVING THE GOALPOSTS

8. SKATING ON THIN ICE

9. THE 5:30 DASH

10. PUSHING YOUR LUCK

A few years later I tried to re-introduce The Advertising Olympics at another company but unfortunately they didn't quite have the same sense of humour as the advertising world had become more irritatingly PC – and banned it.

And if you think this was a little cruel, you should see the events that we left out...
